SECT - Demo (2016) + LP Announced

I've been sitting on this secret of a band for quite a while now, so I am so happy that Noisey has let the cat out of the bag. SECT is a new vegan straight edge hardcore band made up of some heavy hitters to say the least, from Raleigh, Charlotte, Portland & Toronto, including Chris Colohan (Cursed, Burning Love, Left For Dead, The Swarm), James Chang (Prayer For Cleansing, Undying, Gut Feeling, Catharsis), Scott Crouse & Ian Edwards (Earth Crisis) and Andrew Hurley (Enabler, The Damned Things, Fall Out Boy).

This "Demo" looks to be more of a 3-song preview of the upcoming LP, which apparently will have 10 tracks total. And if this demo is any indication, we are all in for a big treat. The first song on the demo, Scourge Of Empire, will utterly destroy you. I swear there are 10 songs jammed into this one minute blast of controlled chaos. Think Nails covering a Left For Dead song while on a rollercoaster. The next two songs (Death Dealer and Sinking) merge together seamlessly on this demo version and slow things down a little bit, giving you a chance to breathe before bludgeoning you over the head with riff after riff. All I can say about songs 2 and 3 is it sounds like Cursed meets Trap Them in a dark alley. Haunting and deadly. If that's not enough to get you ready to give them all your money, I don't know what is. But enough with the comparisons, you just need to listen to this over and over and over again, like I am doing. Needless to say, I can't wait for this LP to drop in a few months.

The SECT Self-titled LP is coming worldwide August 5th. Limited exclusive color vinyl pre-order is now available from Deathwish Inc. in the USA and via Throatruiner Records in Europe. Self-released (LP/CS) in N.America and available in Europe from Reflections Records (LP), Alliance Trax in Japan (CD), Caustic Recordings in Brazil (LP), Cactus Records in Malaysia (CS), and Resist Records Official in Australia. LP will be also distributed by Revelation Records, A389 Recordings and more. Merch packages w/ ltd. color LP coming from Shirt Killer.

From their Facebook page: "With two countries and four hometowns between them, Sect was born when two project ideas between tour mates merged into the same experiment, finally taking shape in 2015 and culminating in recording sessions in Raleigh NC in early 2016. Sect is comprised of five veterans of ‘90s hardcore who cut their teeth in that formative moment of political, cynical, antagonistic extremes. They each went on to put in their time in bands spanning all corners of the hardcore and xvx worlds, though they’d rather skip the ex-members talk entirely and get right down to the blast beats and breakdowns that fight it out in their chaotic jams - aka cut the shit and go for the throat. Because the Orwellian police states and irreparable social and ecological disasters we once saw off on the horizon are now on our front doorsteps, in full swing - and in just such a volatile, precarious moment as this for civilization, there is more reason than ever to keep lashing out at a world more suicidally bent on its own destruction and the exploitation of people, species and the ecosystem itself, than perhaps ever before in history. For Sect, this is the purpose of hardcore as they know it, conveying an urgency that transcends age, credentials or scene politics, to convert desperation into real talk and action."

Must be a good, good feeling....

PHOENIX BODIES/FORCEFEDGLASS

Untitled
PHOENIX BODIES
Untitled
FORCEFEDGLASS

FROM: EARTH
FFO: CHAOS

been meaning to post both of these bands for a while but just hadn't gotten around to it, and then someone in the chat box requested phoenix bodies so what the hell, here they are. these bands were not connected by any members but they are fairly similar and they are both essential. somewhere between screamo, hardcore, grind, and emoviolence lies whatever genre would include these two monstrous noisemakers. forcefedglass was around in the late 90s to early 2000s and is probably most notable for their drummer. ben fucking koller. phoenix bodies was late 90s as well but I think lasted a little longer into the 2000s. and also notable for including carl byers who was a part of one of my favorite bands, the now defunct coffinworm. also both bands featured members of a lot of other screamo/hardcore bands of the same era that I'm not even going to attempt to list.
fun fact: apparently phoenix bodies had a thing about playing naked. imagine my disappointment when I ripped open the plastic on my copy of "too much information" and started flipping through the booklet and looking at all the band pics. wieners. wieners everywhere. I was not prepared. you go download now.
(male nudity not included) (sorry) (or, youre welcome) (depends on how you look at it I guess)

Heard about this band Tape Eater from New Bedford, Massachusetts when Voulge mentioned them in the chat (thanks!). I knew I would like them once he (or she) compared them to The Chariot. I can definitely see that comparison, epic & grandiose-sounding chaotic hardcore with some experimental & noise elements. Very cool stuff. I was happy to see their two releases were freely available on Bandcamp, but was bummed out to see that they played their last show earlier this year. That being said, you should definitely grab this stuff because it is great, even if there won't be any more to come.

Botch-Discography (1993-2002)

Country: USA
Genre: Post Hardcore, Metalcore
Label: Hydrahead
Tracks: 45
Length: 126.0'

Botch was an American metalcore band formed in 1993 in Tacoma, Washington. The band, featuring Brian Cook, Dave Knudson, Tim Latona and Dave Verellen, spent four years as a garage band and released several demos and EPs before signing to Hydra Head Records. Through the label, Botch released two studio albums: American Nervoso (1998) and We Are the Romans (1999). The group toured extensively and internationally in support of their albums with liked-minded bands such as The Blood Brothers, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Ink & Dagger and Jesuit. Botch struggled to write a third studio album, and in 2002 the group broke up due to tensions among the band members and creative differences. Hydra Head posthumously released an EP of songs the group had been working on before they split titled An Anthology of Dead Ends, and a live album documenting their final show titled 061502 in 2006.
After Botch broke up, most of the members went on to form or join new bands in the Seattle/Tacoma area including: Minus the Bear, Mouth of the Architect, Narrows, Roy, Russian Circles and These Arms Are Snakes. The complex tree of interchanging band members among these newly formed groups has been described as "incestuous."
While Botch received high levels of acclaim from several music publications and was cited as an influence among numerous hardcore bands in the years following their break up, the group was initially cast aside by the local Washington underground hardcore scene. The group spent their active years "poking fun" at the local music scene by avoiding common hardcore clichés. Botch composed complex music later to be known as mathcore opposing the simple "chugga-chugga" riffs, they were unique in terms of presentation, opposing common norms of what was accepted in the underground community. Overall, the band, avoided the common "skull and crossbone" imagery, and wrote lyrics that were abstract and about personal experiences opposing the common political or straight edge lyrics of their peers.

GEIST - Son Of Sun Live Session (2016)

GENRE: Crust, Dark Hardcore, Punk, Metal
FFO: Cursed, Esoteric Youth, Worms Feed, Hammers

Geist fucking rules, seriously one of my favorite bands around right now. They have the perfect combination of hooks, anger and dark crusty production. The band features members of various former & current North East UK Bands, including End Reign & Cholera. They have made available their live session at Son of Sun Studios, and it is a must have. Generally I downright hate live recordings, even if they are done in a studio, because 99% of the time it just sounds like shit. But this is the exception, this is done right, and it captures the ferocity of the band perfectly. The session on Bandcamp is 5 songs, but there will be an extra track on the cassette, so be sure to order one of those if that's your thing, there are only going to be 50 of them. But for now, just play this shit as loud as you can.
