Burning Love - Reunion/Final Show - 5/31/2025 - Toronto

Holy smokes, what a weekend. Prepare The Ground 2025 in Toronto was fantastic. Everything was worth it just to hang out with Chris from Burning Love and then see their reunion (2nd attempt) and sadly, final show. Chris is the nicest fucking person on the planet, he went out of his way to meet up, show us around a bit, let me in on some Cursed lore, hooked me up with some killer posters, looked out for me with my recording nonsense (always a mess), and in general, just being a kind human. The Burning Love set was GREAT, and huge, almost 50 minutes. Everyone got their money's worth for sure. Hopefully you guys dig this video, it's a good representation of the show, audio was a bitch, has to merge 2 different sources but it all worked out in the end.

Other things of note: Kowloon Walled City played Friday and were amazing, and they did a Shallow North Dakota cover set on Saturday with guest vocalists which was KILLER. If you don't know Shallow North Dakota, you need to. They were a pummeling, abstract sludge punk band from Hamilton, Ontario. Loud as fuck 3-piece featuring the bass player from the last version of Cursed. Their singer died a few years ago from Cancer, I believe. Lets see, Young Widows were great, Kylesa were great, Alaskan reunited and were great, Midwife was great, Atlas Moth, Coliseum, No Man, Morne, Dismal Aura etc etc...I know I'm missing a few. The whole trip was a blast.

Burning Love is dead. Long live Burning Love

UNWELL // 𝗉̶𝗅̶𝗎̶𝗌̶ ̶𝖡̶𝖴̶𝖱̶𝖭̶𝖨̶𝖭̶𝖦̶ ̶𝖫̶𝖮̶𝖵̶𝖤̶ ̶𝗋̶𝖾̶𝗎̶𝗇̶𝗂̶𝗈̶𝗇̶/̶𝖿̶𝗂̶𝗇̶𝖺̶𝗅̶ ̶𝗌̶𝗁̶𝗈̶𝗐̶

In what will most likely be the final (or near final) post here (no real reason, it just seems like we are all super burned out, I know I am. Thanks go to the chat for keeping this site on life support), I am coming full circle here (my first post was a Cursed post) and am bringing you UNWELL, a (still ongoing) pandemic project from Chris Colohan. In his own words,
"I started making solo music just over the pandemic, & it was right as things were returning to fake normal that it really got rolling. Learning to play and record simultaneously with the total lack of moderation skills compounded by mad ADHD left me with over 100 songs spinning all at once, all of them 90% done. They comprise four full LPs of different genres (& one double one, possibly). I’m going to start posting a song from each so I have to finish what I started"

As stated above, a song from each is available on Bandcamp. They range from creepy spoken word, to moody acoustic to atmospheric doom & psych. In addition to more or less having his total musical output be the inspiration for this blog, I don't think there is anyone in the scene who doesn't owe something to him in some way or another, whether it be the reason for starting your own band or just benefitting from his natural kindness and him just being an all around good dude. Hopefully this is just the beginning of more Chris Colohan as we know it.

And for a bonus, UNWELL will be playing live for the first time at the 2024 Prepare The Ground music festival in Toronto. This festival is happening May 31-June 2 across 5 venues, and it looks like Unwell will be playing on Sunday June 2nd.

But wait, there's more. BURNING LOVE (both lineups) will also be reuniting to play their final show on Sunday June 2nd at Prepare The Ground as well. This is fucking crazy news and as long as I can get my passport straightened out in time, I will definitely be attending. Just kidding, Pat, Burning Love's guitarist, just recently broke his wrist, so unfortunately they will not be playing Prepare The Ground. Look for something from them in 2025, if the universe doesn't ruin that too. I got a passport and tickets for Sunday so I'm still going. I'll be mad, but I'm still going.

SECT - Demo (2016) + LP Announced

I've been sitting on this secret of a band for quite a while now, so I am so happy that Noisey has let the cat out of the bag. SECT is a new vegan straight edge hardcore band made up of some heavy hitters to say the least, from Raleigh, Charlotte, Portland & Toronto, including Chris Colohan (Cursed, Burning Love, Left For Dead, The Swarm), James Chang (Prayer For Cleansing, Undying, Gut Feeling, Catharsis), Scott Crouse & Ian Edwards (Earth Crisis) and Andrew Hurley (Enabler, The Damned Things, Fall Out Boy).

This "Demo" looks to be more of a 3-song preview of the upcoming LP, which apparently will have 10 tracks total. And if this demo is any indication, we are all in for a big treat. The first song on the demo, Scourge Of Empire, will utterly destroy you. I swear there are 10 songs jammed into this one minute blast of controlled chaos. Think Nails covering a Left For Dead song while on a rollercoaster. The next two songs (Death Dealer and Sinking) merge together seamlessly on this demo version and slow things down a little bit, giving you a chance to breathe before bludgeoning you over the head with riff after riff. All I can say about songs 2 and 3 is it sounds like Cursed meets Trap Them in a dark alley. Haunting and deadly. If that's not enough to get you ready to give them all your money, I don't know what is. But enough with the comparisons, you just need to listen to this over and over and over again, like I am doing. Needless to say, I can't wait for this LP to drop in a few months.

The SECT Self-titled LP is coming worldwide August 5th. Limited exclusive color vinyl pre-order is now available from Deathwish Inc. in the USA and via Throatruiner Records in Europe. Self-released (LP/CS) in N.America and available in Europe from Reflections Records (LP), Alliance Trax in Japan (CD), Caustic Recordings in Brazil (LP), Cactus Records in Malaysia (CS), and Resist Records Official in Australia. LP will be also distributed by Revelation Records, A389 Recordings and more. Merch packages w/ ltd. color LP coming from Shirt Killer.

From their Facebook page: "With two countries and four hometowns between them, Sect was born when two project ideas between tour mates merged into the same experiment, finally taking shape in 2015 and culminating in recording sessions in Raleigh NC in early 2016. Sect is comprised of five veterans of ‘90s hardcore who cut their teeth in that formative moment of political, cynical, antagonistic extremes. They each went on to put in their time in bands spanning all corners of the hardcore and xvx worlds, though they’d rather skip the ex-members talk entirely and get right down to the blast beats and breakdowns that fight it out in their chaotic jams - aka cut the shit and go for the throat. Because the Orwellian police states and irreparable social and ecological disasters we once saw off on the horizon are now on our front doorsteps, in full swing - and in just such a volatile, precarious moment as this for civilization, there is more reason than ever to keep lashing out at a world more suicidally bent on its own destruction and the exploitation of people, species and the ecosystem itself, than perhaps ever before in history. For Sect, this is the purpose of hardcore as they know it, conveying an urgency that transcends age, credentials or scene politics, to convert desperation into real talk and action."

Must be a good, good feeling....

REMINDER - New Burning Love 7" Is Out Now

Heads up in case you haven't picked this up already. The newest 7" from Burning Love is now available in vinyl & digital form. ALWAYS great to hear new music from this band, and this new stuff does not disappoint. This record picks up right where their last LP left off with their unmistakable punk/hardcore sound melded with the inimitable Chris Colohan lyrics/vocals you've come to expect. The vinyl has 2 songs and can be ordered from Deathwish (along with new shirts). You should get a digital download if you buy the 7", which includes a 3rd bonus song, or if you don't want the vinyl, just pick up the songs below for $2.50.

BURNING LOVE - Unreleased Demos (2007-2009)

BURNING LOVE [c. 2009]    ☼    BLOG    FACEBOOK

Burning Love started in 2007 as a side project to the Toronto bands Cursed and Our Father. It was not until the sudden breakup of Cursed that the band began writing and recording full-time. Following the dissolution of Cursed in 2008, Burning Love recorded a 5-song demo and released it on cassette. The demo was later pressed into a self-titled 7 inch in 2009 and released first on British label Thirty Days of Night Records (to coincide with a UK tour), and then domestically in April, 2010 on Deranged Records. This is the demo we have all come to know and love. But did you know there was another?

The band actually started recording their first EP in 2007. Engineering the session was Sean Pearson, who either recorded or mixed every Cursed record. It was also 5 songs, 3 of which (Lives Of The Saints, Alien VS. Creditor, Money Shots) ended up being re-recorded for the demo. Internet Exploder was later renamed to High Speed Wires for the "Songs For Burning Lovers" LP and Busted, which has never been formally released. According to frontman Chris Colohan, this early EP was just over-mixed until the band hated it. A final mix was never agreed upon, and the project was eventually abandoned. Soon thereafter, the "official" demo was recorded live one night in their jam space. But now thanks to the kindness of Mr. Colohan, in the spirit of The Stooges Funhouse Sessions & The Misfits Boxset, you can hear the rough, raw Burning Love EP that never was. Enjoy.

But that's not quite all. I also have a few more gems to share with you. A pair of practice space demos from 2008 that were recorded by guitarist Andrus Meret (Busted & Internet Exploder), and a smoking demo version of Gain from 2009, a song that ended up on the "Songs For Burning Lovers" LP. While these are definitely a treat for any Burning Love fan, don't expect pristine quality on these.

****These were put on Bandcamp for sharing purposes only. This shit is definitely NOT for sale****

BURNING LOVE

BURNING LOVE    ☼    FACEBOOK    BLOG    BANDCAMP    WIKI

Rounding out my Chris Colohan-related band posts is Burning Love. If you're reading this, there's a good chance you are already well aware of Burning Love as they are Colohan's current band. They are signed to Southern Lord and have released numerous 7 inches & LP's as well as completed several tours. Last I heard they were working on a new LP, which is fantastic news. It's difficult to not compare any Chris Colohan band to Cursed, but in this case, you really can't, they are just too different. While still a force to be reckoned with, Burning Love seems much more accessible than Cursed ever was. I miss the sheer ferocity you got with Cursed but anytime you have Chris Colohan in an active band, it's a good thing.

Like the Cursed releases, i'm not going to post download links as pretty much all of their releases are still in print and I don't really feel like dealing with any DMCA violations. I encourage anyone reading this to buy all their shit immediately. Here's a list of where you can grab their stuff and some streaming music:

I do, however, have just a few BL goodies I can share with you. Take a listen to "Busted", supposedly an outtake from their demo recording sessions, but I'm not 100% convinced of that:

And here they are live on a EXD Studio 3 Session. This was recorded and broadcast on Sunday February 24, 2008. Stream it below or download it here: http://archive.org/details/EXD-08-24-02-BURNINGLOVE
