RIP Feast Of Tentacles

Sadly, the amazing Feast Of Tentacles label is shutting down. The only good news is that all distro stock must go and you can get 40% off with the code IDIOT at feastoftentacles.limitedrun.com.

R.I.P. @ SAINT VITUS BAR

It was a night of sweaty rock n roll, fuzz, traditional metal and street doom (whatever that means exactly...). Rattlesnake and Mick's Jaguar brought all of the rock n roll swagger and boogie you could hope for. Mick's Jaguar just released their new LP on Riding Easy Records (label home of R.I.P. as well); if their show is any indicator of how the album is it will be a really great listen for fans of Thin Lizzy, AC/DC, and plain fun party rock, plus they have a triple guitar attack. R.I.P. was beyond awesome. They began the evening by announcing themselves as the first true metal show anyone in attendance had ever seen. Whether or not that is true they left everyone at Saint Vitus satisfied customers! Try and see them if you can, who doesn't love a front man with a scythe as his custom mic stand?

LATE R.I.P. TO TOXICBREED'S FUNHOUSE

Man, somehow I completely missed this and I don't remember it being mentioned here at all so I figured I'd formally pay my respects to the late, great TOXICBREED'S FUNHOUSE. Starting way back in 2008, this was always one of my daily go-to's. Although it hadn't been nearly as active over the past year or so, I took comfort in knowing it was there. But, all good things must come to an end. Sending my thanks to the dudes there for making it great.

R. I. P. The ELEMENTARY REVOLT

Well, this sure ruined my fucking day. For reasons unknown (to me), the legendary Elementary Revolt has closed it's doors for good. All posts have been deleted. I'm blown away. The site had an amazing run, starting way back in 2006, and was definitely the inspiration for this blog you are reading now. I can't even begin to tell you how many cool bands I have stumbled across there. Everyone that contributed there was super cool and I am truly sad to see it go. Chris, a regular writer there, has his own blog going called Manic Compression, so at least we have that refuge to turn to.

And, as death usually does to people, I have a renewed spirit to try to make this blog 1/100th as cool as The ER was. I will try my best to post more, and I believe Krustie from the ER will start posting here as well. I can't tell you how excited I am to have him on board, even though it is bittersweet.

So, before you curl up in a fetal position, stop by The Elementary Revolt one last time and pay your respects.

KING DIRT - Hail Yeah (R.I.P.)

KING DIRT    ☼    FACEBOOK    BANDCAMP

King Dirt was a short-lived, female-fronted 5-piece from Asheville, NC. They were only around for about a year but still managed to posthumously release this killer 5-song EP. It's very punk, very metal, very hardcore and, most importantly, very North Carolina.

R.I.P. (?) ESOTERIC YOUTH

ESOTERIC YOUTH    ☼    FACEBOOK    BANDCAMP    TUMBLR    TWITTER

Bad news, it looks like Esoteric Youth is playing what might be their last show tonight in Camden, UK. By the time this goes up, the show may have already happened because I'm an American and here in the States, we have no clue what time it is anywhere else on the planet. Esoteric Youth has been around since 2012 and have released 3 cassettes and a 7". They are all fantastic and represent pretty much what this blog is all about - dark & blackened hardcore. Downloading their catalog is a no-brainer, and don't feel guilty, all of this is sold-out anyway. Enjoy, and here's to hoping that new bands are formed out of their demise.

R.I.P. HEKSED [2008-2014]

HEKSED    ☼    FACEBOOOK    BANDCAMP

Unfortunately, Heksed decided to call it quits the other day via a message from their guitarist on Facebook. The main reasons are medical conditions and general lack of production, but you should go read the post and pay your respects yourself. Heksed was from Oslo, Norway, and over the course of 3 releases, they had managed to master walking the very very fine line between metal and hardcore. They always reminded me a lot of the Belgium band Worms Feed or a more metallic Baptists. Throw in a dash of Cursed and The Swarm and you have yourself the perfect thrash/hardcore band. One thing that always stood out for me about this band was their awesomely superior, and dark graphic design. Their logo is cool as shit and their imagery was always scary as fuck. They mention there may be a return of the band sometime in the future but you never know. In the meantime, start listening to them right now. Their split with Deathseekers is the only thing still in print (I think), so start by buying that. And if you like this stuff, you should give them some $$$ on bandcamp. These are instant classics.

MASAKARI - R.I.P.

Damn, Cleveland's Masakari have been a staple in the crust/hardcore community for a while now, but I guess shit happens. Hopefully some or all of the members will continue to make music in some way. If you aren't familiar with them, take the time to stream their releases below.

And, if you dig them, the band has always allowed their music to be downloaded for free.

R.I.P. BIQUETTE DE MAURIAC aka THE GRIND GOAT

GRIND GOAT    ☼    FACEBOOK

This seriously fucking bummed me out today. That fucking goat that was more into grindcore than you has made the sad voyage to Valhalla. Made famous in 2011 by being pictured thoroughly enjoying a set by Wormrot on a farm, Biquette was actually a fan of all grindcore according to the farm owner:

When did you first notice she enjoyed attending the shows?
While she was here, she always loved concerts, settings with lots of people. As soon as there was someone she had never seen, she stuck up against them for an hour! And when there were lots of people, it was above all a chance to go steal a little tobacco or something else that was lying around!
Were there any bands or music she particularly liked?
I remember that during Panzer Cardinal (a band from Toulouse) she spent the entire set at the bassist's feet (who, by the way, was hallucinating a bit). She was most connected to grind (it seems weird to talk like this about a biquette but nevertheless it's true!!!). Seeing as the barn floor where we throw the concerts is wooden, I think that she felt the vibrations in her hooves. The majority of the time she even laid down next to the speakers.

Visit METALINJECTION and METALINSIDER to read more & also stop by Biquette's Facebook page!

HEARTLESS [R.I.P.] - Discography

HEARTLESS    ☼    FACEBOOK    BANDCAMP    BLOG

Heartless was an AMAZINGLY brutal hardcore/punk/grind band from Pittsburgh, PA. Every single one of their songs fucking rages, they're pound-for-pound one of the best hardcore bands and they're way up there on my favorites list. "Hell Is Other People" is probably the best album title to ever exist. Unfortunately, they decided to call it quits earlier this month. Fucking devastating. They will no longer be participating in their planned October tour. That's it, the end. It's shitty news but hopefully they will go on to make more music in other bands, and at least they left behind a discography that's worth it's weight in gold:
