SIBERIAN HELL SOUNDS // CONVULSING - Split LP (2017)

I've been a huge fan of Siberian Hell Sounds since their inception in 2013. I feel like they are cosmically connected to this blog as their debut EP was one of the first things I posted here and it seems they release something amazing every year for me to talk about. It's also worth mentioning that they are super cool dudes as well. That being said, it's fitting that they, along with Convulsing, close out this shit & garbage filled year with a 2 track LP that sounds like it is ushering in the dawn of the apocalypse. Siberian Hell Sounds have been evolving and mutating over the years into what you hear now on Side A. I can't say it better than the Art As Catharsis label did:

"The Breath Of The Beast marks the moment when Siberian Hell Sounds transcended the sum of its parts, and emerged as a hypnotically heavy drone machine - more a cataclysmic force majeure than music. Siberian Hell Sounds draw influence from clandestine corners of extreme music while never adhering to the tropes of any particular subgenre."

Convulsing's Side B is just as haunting and damaging, made all the more impressive by the fact that this is a band consisting solely of one Brendan Sloan of Dumbsaint. I am forever jealous of people that are able to put all of this together by themselves, and the oppressive atmosphere he is able to create here is mind boggling. Here are some more words that describe this madness far better than I could:

"Convulsing’s Engraved On Bleached Bone exists as a bridge between two selves: between despondency and turmoil of the past, and the uncertainty of the present. It is a knife at the throat of a now-defeated enemy. A bloodied howl of contempt."

"Cathartic excess" is a brilliant way to describe this release and it's two, 20-minute tracks. Do yourself a favor and find a dark room, turn this all the way up. Lie down. Try not to cry. Cry a lot. Because you deserve it.

I'm a little late with this but I had to mention this "new" LP from my dudes in Siberian Hell Sounds on Art As Catharsis Records. Side A is pressed at 45rpm and contains their last 4-song release, "⍲⍕⍎⍱". Side B is 3 songs at 33rpm and is culled from their splits with ​NØNE and Travels. While you should already have this stuff downloaded, you should also really have all of this stuff together in a proper vinyl release, so here's your chance. Once again, I'm late to the party on this one. I've been on a self-imposed posting hiatus for some time now, and I apologize for that. Thankfully Chris has been killing it here, but I'm trying to get back in the swing of things. Anyway, this little release is from May and i just ran across it, buried in my email. If you've followed this blog in the past you should know I'm a massive fan of Siberian Hell Sounds. For this release, they team up with Travels for a split of epic proportions. Each band delivers a single track, seamlessly merging from one composition to the next. Ishtar is a marked departure from the grinding riff warfare that has made Siberian Hell Sounds a name amongst heavy music fans. Paying tribute to their post-metal influences SHS delivers nine minutes of droning ebb and flow, a perfect companion for Travels' darkly epic opener Chasing Circles. Both tracks can be listened to and downloaded on a name-your-price basis on their respective Bandcamp pages.

When I heard the first notes of the first release from Siberian Hell Sounds about a year and a half ago, I was immediately hooked. It had everything I loved. Creepy sample in front of the title track, followed by insanely catchy, powerful hardcore beats. Manic vocals, production in the red, and perfectly timed blast beats. I listened to it probably 20 times in a row. They followed up with the PCPEP not long after, which was more of the same craziness, although with a noticeable slowdown in spots and tinged with some doom. Last October saw a split 10" with NØNE, which featured two SHS tracks. The production here was more polished, not in a bad way, just different and better. Those songs have a more epic, dark experimental sound to them. More complex in every way, Slower still in parts, faster in others, but just as powerful as any of their other releases. I was intrigued, and thrilled that they weren't devolving into a straight up doom band. To go along with this record, the band released a short film/music video. It's beautiful and haunting, and I would try to describe it more but it's better if you just watch it for yourself: 

Now, I feel like they've hit their stride with their newest offering, ⍲⍕⍎⍱. A 4-song, impossible to pronounce EP that sounds like Cursed, Hierophant and Dead In The Dirt made some sort of fucked up, evil, hardcore hell-spawn. In other words, it's fucking fantastic. It really is near-perfect as far as I'm concerned. Riffs, Hooks, Chugs, Blasts... It's all there. Honestly some of the coolest hardcore beats I've heard in a long time. While it's a shame that there's only 4 songs, don't worry, more is on the way. A split with Travels is coming soon. I'm being told to expect something completely different from the rest of their shit. And, an LP should be finished sometime this year. Needless to say, you should grab this newest release immediately, along with all their other stuff at their Bandcamp page. If you can, throw some $$$ their way to help pay for all this stuff.

Australia's Siberian Hell Sounds had one of my favorite releases of 2013. Their self-titled EP from September blew me away, and I've been waiting on the edge of my seat ever since I heard they would have another EP coming just a few months later. It's a bit doom-ier than the last release as it was mainly influenced by bands like Mammoth Grinder and Seven Sisters of Sleep, but the production is amazing and the new songs are still ferocious, interesting and full of riffs. The story goes that sometime in 1989, Russian scientists in Siberia had drilled a borehole some 14.5 kilometers deep into the Earth's crust. The drill broke through into a cavity, and the scientists lowered some equipment to see what was down there. The temperature was about 1,100°C (about 2,000°F), but the real shocker was the sound that was recorded. They only got about 17 seconds of audio before the microphone melted, but it was 17 horrifying seconds of the screams of the damned.

Proving that existence of a physical Hell on earth is SIBERIAN HELL SOUNDS, a new 3-piece from Brisbane, Australia. They just spawned an 8-song EP that dumps riff, upon riff on top of your fucking head. Starting off with a chilling intro by Dr. Azzacov himself, it never lets up after that. This is seriously one of the best things I've heard this year. Get this immediately and prepare yourself for another EP within the next couple of months.
