Friendship-Undercurrent LP (2019)

Country: Japan
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Crust, Powerviolence
Label: Daymare Recordings
Tracks: 10
Length: 20.15'

Hailing from the Chiba prefecture of western Japan, Friendship are one of the most vile, antagonist, and visionary grind/powerviolence acts to have ever emerged from The Land of the Rising Sun. Their absurdly devastating music comes together as a collapsing black hole that devours everything with maniacal ferocity, sparing nothing from the plain of existence. In perfect adherence to the tradition of Japanese extreme music where everything is always taken to ridiculous and mindless extremes, Friendship's music is like a chain reaction that can not be stopped - the devastating consequence of an uncontrolled nuclear fission of Japan's most praised and iconic musical extremities embracing the full scale auditive terror of legendary American powerviolence bands like Nails, Column of Heaven, Man Is The Bastard, Iron Lung, and Hatred Surge, and the tormented sludge dirges of masters like Swans, Godflesh, Corrupted, Noothgrush, and Dystopia. (Press Note)

*This is some harsh, abrasive, and vicious as fuck sounding hardcore, punk, crust, and powerviolence.  Seriously, this absolutely rips.  Undercurrent was released via Daymare recordings on February 9th, 2019.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

(JAP) Endon-Boy Meets Girl LP (2019)

Country: Japan
Genre: Black Metal, Noise
Label: Thrill Jockey
Tracks: 8
Length: 28.30'

ENDON is a band as mercurial as they are ferocious. Comprised of the quintet of vocalist Taichi Nagura, guitarist Koki Miyabe, drummer Shin Yokota, and electronics/noisemakers Taro Aiko and Etsuo Nagura, ENDON’s music is contained chaos, bending and colliding genres into one another atop a bed of thunderous distortion, feedback, and unearthly squeals. Vocalist Taichi’s voice embodies an unreal number of personalities with wordless howls seething one moment, and agonized cries the next, before desperate gasps for air. It comes as no surprise that they have been credited as the most extreme band in Tokyo. Boy Meets Girl finds ENDON relishing in the unexpected and shifting with relentless force from pounding sludge to off-kilter hardcore to synth-driven dance to utter oblivion.

Boy Meets Girl was envisioned as a soundtrack to an imagined horror film about love. Disparate influences such as horrorcore, Dick Dale, Joe Meek and the Dead Kennedys converge and erupt forth over the course of single songs. The warped story of the album unfolds in scattered motifs and references, with the titular “boy” being born from a womb of noise and dealing with the conflicts that arise when recognizing the world, and love, outside his own ego. The record takes an abstract approach to the subject of love and looks beyond the well tread romantic aspects in favor of an altogether more disorienting take.

ENDON set out to make fictional film score with “light music,” played by a much heavier band. The core of the ensemble’s song structures are often built around Koki’s fuzz-laden guitar and Shin’s drum bombast which propel torrents of hisses and squelches from Taro and Etsuo. Taichi’s largely lyric-less screams, moans, and whimpers are potent messengers of the songs’ emotional heft. Recorded by Atsuo of Boris, Boy Meets Girl is not entirely harsh and heavy. Sequencer delicacies are laced into pieces like the mammoth “Doubts As a Source.” The respite of “Red Shoes” lay bare ENDON’s ability to construct detailed arrangements, a trait shared with the album’s more eviscerating songs.

There lies an ecstatic, excited energy amidst the anarchic defiance ENDON’s music exudes. Born of the same Japanese scenes that gave rise to the likes of Merzbow and Boredoms, their sound is equally diverse and abrasive. Boy Meets Girl demonstrates ENDON’s singular faculty to produce music that is at once tortured and transcendent.
(Press Note)

*Seriously this is some seriously awesome experimental noise damaged metal!  Overall, Boy Meets Girl makes for an awesome listen and definitely should not be missed.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!  Boy Meets Girl was released via Thrill Jockey records on February 15th, 2019.

夢遊病者 Sleepwalker-For This Time Only, Never Again EP (2018)

Country: Japan
Genre: Black Metal, Experimental
Label: Sentient Ruin Laboratories
Tracks: 6
Length: 22.30'

一期一会 (Ichi-go ichi-e): "for this time only, never again". This japanese idiom is the central theme of the new, second, unbelievable album of the same name by the elusive psychedelic/avantgarde black metal enigma 夢遊病者 (Sleepwalker). Once again fusing drone, raw black metal, kraut/psychedelic rock, free-jazz, noise rock, and tribal ritualism to absolutely mind-melting effect, Sleepwalker's idea behind this new record was to take central superstitions that rule the rhetoric of eastern lore and funnel them through the prism of the modern world. The final result: the band's staple psychedelic black metal mind-fuck ritual gloriously preserved and burning brighter and more insanely than ever. Suspended between the visionary opposites of bands like Voivod, Zeni Geva, Oxbow, King Crimson, Ornassi Pazuzu, Lurker of Chalice, and Xasthur, with "一期一会" Sleepwalker have once again proven to be one of the most mind-expanding and visionary experimental black metal acts of our times.

Fuck On The Beach/Terlarang-Split LP (2017)

Country: Japan/Malaysia
Genre: Hardcore, Punk, Grindcore, Powerviolence
Label: Wooaaargh! Records
Tracks: 21
Length: 19.24'

Fuck On The Beach
If you don't know what to expect here I can't really help, this is brutal, lightspeed clattering blasts, razorwire treble drenched guitar and whirling layered screaming at it's finest. Plenty of ear splitting distortion, feedback, mics peaking and everything way too loud in the best way. This is fun loving fastcore powervioelce from Japan which I'm pretty sure even has a 'clap-track' on the self titled outro track. Fucking excelent. This side of the split is primarily hyper fast d-beats with the odd blast thrown in, so is sonically the inverse of the Terlarang side. For fants of Japanese style everything faster and louder style grindviolence.
Terlarang Lo-fi to the point of incomprehensibility this side of the split goes even further down the slopes of  treble-valley than Fuck On The Beach, sounding like the guitars are physically tearing the speaker cones from the amp and the rest of the band are trying frantically to hold them back in. Everything here is fast, no slow at all on this side. Maybe one or two slightly slower than lightspeed d-beat smashers floating about in there but this is really all about the pace. The fast as fuck and don't care nature is epitomised by the cats on the split cover and the last track basically sounding like black metal but being called 'Stop The Hate' in what seems to be a conscious rejection of the bullshit ideals of traditional NSBM. Nice.

This split is relentless and will hurt your ears in a charming way, fun frantic ear-splitters from start to finish.  (Press Note)

*This is a killer split featuring 7 tracks from Japan's Fuck On The Beach and fourteen tracks from Malaysia's Terlarang!  Absolutely devastating hardcore, punk, grindcore, and powerviolence.  This split was released via Wooaaargh! records on December 27th, 2017.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!
