so heres some more fantastic Italian hatred. found these guys thanks to cvltnation. this is a duo that's puts out an unreal amount of noise for just two guys. recently released a new album that's fanfuckingtastic. really dark stuff. even the soft more melodic sections give you an uneasy feeling. like something truly sinister is waiting just below the surface. then of course the heavier sections are just blown out sludge perfection. really good shit. couple different links for different labels on bandcamp that are offering up all 3 of their releases for either free or nyp. (found their stuff on a total of 5 different European labels but im only putting up the first 2) snag it all. you wont regret it. oh and in case anyone cares I guess merda means "shit" in Italian.

HUNGRY LIKE RAKOVITZ

COUNTRY: ITALY
FFO: OZMA ERA MELVINS, DEAD IN THE DIRT, HIS HERO IS GONE, THE SECRET

if I ever decide to move out of dumpsville ohio, itll be to one of 3 places. Oakland. Portland. or Italy. with out a doubt the 3 best areas of this godforsaken planet that perpetually vomit up the best that metal has to offer. hungry like rakovitz is some prime Italian vomit. I initially scrolled past this when I saw it because I thought the band name was dumb. still kind of do think its dumb and I have no idea what it means and why this rakovitz guy is so hungry but whatever. maybe somethings lost in the translation. anyway I went back and saw they had an integrity cover on their new ep so it piqued my interest. goddfuckingdammit this shit is phenomenal. short kind of disjointed songs that kind of blur together into one long song, which could be a drawback for some but I love it. of all the bands up there that I mentioned the one that I think sticks out is fellow Italians the secret. yeah hungry like rakovitz are spitting out these short sludgy blasts but they have a certain blackness and hatred in the tone that reminds me of the secret (I fucking love them). this is the best shit ive heard all week. they use the tag "grimecore" on their bandcamp page and I really cant think of a better term for whats going on here. get on this shit.

so i did the cobra noir post yesterday and while putting that together I found this. this is Patrick fontaine's, guitarist for cobra noir and the black hand, current project. this kind of stuff isn't typically my area so im probably not the best one to review it but I thought id put it up for anyone interested. this is mostly instrumental ambient post rock. some mild doom elements. and I do mean mild. the only thing I can think of to compare it to would maybe be harvestman or neurosis more calm moments or maybe godspeed you! black emperor. again not really my thing but I guess its good as this stuff goes.

COBRA NOIR

COUNTRY: CANADA
FFO: KICK ASS PUNK
so other than wormwitch, and I think ive made clear my love of those guys, im not really finding a lot of new bands that are jumping out and grabbing my attention at the moment so I thought id go ahead and refresh that cobra noir post. they were around from about 2004 till 2009 and goddammit these guys were good. melodic crusty punk/hardcore. nothing extremely technical or over the top. just a solid hardcore band from top to bottom. out of all the Canadian hardcore bands ive mentioned with ties to cursed, these guys were the ones with no direct link to cursed, although they did share members with the black hand and ire who did have members from cursed. ironically they were the closest in sound and tone out of all of them to what cursed was doing. and out of that group they are probably my favorite not named cursed. (confused yet?) (bothered by how many times ive said cursed?) (I purposely chose that band pic because the singer was wearing a cursed shirt) (oh and...CURSED) each one of them seemed to have a different take on hardcore. ire was heavily doom influenced. cobra noir was the most punk. the black hand had excellent crust/thrash sound. acrid was as much grind as it was hardcore. and mi amore (whos only connection here is sharing members with cobra noir) were the most straight up hardcore. I have several links below for what im pretty sure is all their recorded output. I also have a link for the abridged pause blog which contains links for all the discographies of the other bands ive mentioned (except mi amore. that may turn up here as well). and there you can also find discogs for other great bands like spread the disease, new day rising, ignorance never settles and several others who all, in a 6 degrees of kevin bacon kind of way, tied in to this family tree.

WORMWITCH....AGAIN

NEW TRACK!!

so I posted the first ep, "the long defeat" from these guys a couple weeks ago and in case anyone missed that fantastic bit of hatred then stop reading now and go get it then come back here. ill wait....(literally waiting like a dumbass right now)...ok everyone ready? good. so I got an email from one of the guys in the band yesterday and they dropped a new song and all I can say fffuuuuuckin mother fuck fuck this shit is good. this song is a little more straight forward blackened thrash than the ep but its just as great. less of a punk vibe on this. no one would, or should, argue that goatwhore is one of the most hateful bands around right now and im happy to say this track leads me to believe that wormwitch is headed down that same path. this shit kills. further solidifies my statement about these guys being the best new band ive heard in a long time. not sure about a release date on new material yet, but you can check out the new track below. listen to this. throat punch a stranger while listening to this. repeatedly.

Cows were a noise rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band formed in 1987 and disbanded in 1998. They were known for a unique mixture of punk rock and blues played with large amounts of noise and surreal humour; their music is often considered noise rock.  Cunning Stunts was Cows' fifth album, which was released via Amphetamine Reptile records back in 1991.  As far as classic punk tinged noise rock bands are concerned, Cows were probably one of the best to come out of the AmRep noise scene in the 1990's.  Cunning Stunts was an album I used to spin when in high school and college, so I was absolutely floored to see this album get the reissue treatment.  Cunning Stunts features twelve tracks of bluesy punk and noise rock.  Overall, Stunning Cunts was probably Cows' best album they ever recorded.  Cunning Stunts actually sounds great and definitely stands up to the test of time and does not really sound dated, which is definitely a good thing in my book.  Highly recommended!  Enjoy!

ASCENSION

COUNTRY: USA
FFO: 90'S METALCORE

ill make no secret about my love of metalcore. the era approximately between 1994 to 1999. that era is golden as far as im concerned. it was a big part of my teenage years and into my 20s. its where my love of converge and zao started. 2 of my top 5 favorite bands. and really outside of faith no more and the melvins its what ive spent the majority of my time listening to. that era of the genre that is. its hung with me the longest. the second album, "abomination", by ascension is one of the best albums to come from that era. these guys were from Cleveland I believe but I could be wrong, and if it wasn't Cleveland then im pretty sure it was northern ohio anyway. they weren't completely original and didn't really break any new ground but what they did do they did well. seriously tight metalcore with an emphasis on metal. riffs on top of riffs. the last album came out in 1998 and I don't know much about what happened to the members after that. I do know one guy was chimaira who I honestly don't know much about since id moved on from that genre by then. honestly I think the only 2000s metalcore I hung on to was shadows fall and himsa. outside of those 2 id quit paying attention to it. with all these new bands popping up that are trying their hardest to sound like disembodied, who really seem to be bigger now than when they were an actual band (someone explain that please), and morning again, all these albums are becoming relevant again. so listen up.

FUCK. 2Ø15

I haven't made a post on this blog in well over a year because I am actually incredibly lazy and an awful when it comes to keeping up on things like this...SORRY.

So after a bit of inactivity on my part here, what you are going to see below is something I worked on for a few weeks in December. While many people tend to compile a year end list of "best records" of the year that just passed, I took it a step further and was a real dork.

I made a mixtape.

Yes, a real physical mixtape. I put together art work of pictures I took with a Polaroid camera this past year, hand wrote a track listing on a J-card insert that I cut out and then sat in my bed room to put songs to a master cassette one at a time until I felt like I had a mix of songs that accurately represented the albums I listened to over and over again in the year 2015 (minus a few that were unfortunately too long to fit somewhere on a 90 minute Maxell cassette tape.) I then made 25 copies of this cassette to give to friends around the city of Rochester NY, where I live and to send across the country, to the friends I am not fortunate to see as often as I would like.

The songs on this tape represent the memories and emotions of an entire year. Everything I am happy to remember and all the things I would like to forget.

Adam wanted me to make a post about this mixtape, after he was kind enough to do a lot of digging around the Internet for the digital versions of all the songs on the tape (minus one song that won't officially be available until March) that he has compiled to Bandcamp and has made downloadable for all possible interested parties. He is the man and I cannot thank him enough.

I hope you enjoy what you hear and maybe even find a new favorite band out of this little labor of love of mine. XOXOXOXOXOXOXO

Fuck, 2015.

VIOLENT ENDS

COUNTRY: USA
FFO: CURSED, TRAP THEM, BAPTISTS

so yeah heres another really fucking good one I found a while back. I know virtually nothing about them other than they were from north Carolina and their facebook page has been inactive for almost 3 years so im guessing theyre long broken up. shame too because they were awesome. maybe its just me but at times this vocalists sounds more like chris colohan than chris colohan. I understand that could be considered blasphemy but ill risk it. seriously though these guys pull off the cursed sound and tone without sounding like theyre trying to sound like cursed. if that makes any sense. probably not. I need sleep. anyway, get on this shit. also if anyone knows anything about them leave a comment. im curious about what theyre doing now and if any members are still active in other bands.

GROAK

COUNTRY: UK
FFO: SLIME, FILTH, MUCK, RUBBISH
you have to say that ffo like the old woman from buttercups dream in the princess bride. at least that's how im saying. so this showed up in my inbox a few days ago. really solid debut here. heavy as hell sludge with some slight crust and grind influence. vocals are more screamy and higher pitched than whats typical in this genre. at times the vocals kind of remind me of the grady avenell from will haven which is all good in my book. any fan of dirty ass sludge will find something to like here. good shit.

BRAUHEIST

BRAUHEIST EP cover art
COUNTRY: CANADA
FFO: 80S THRASH, MOTORHEAD, BURNING LOVE

found this a while back and its worked its way into the rotation again. ive probably listened to this all the way through 10 times in the last few days. this shit is fanfuckingtastic. 25 minutes of pure thrash rage, punk attitude, and rock and roll swagger. not a skipworthy track here. just wish there was more from these guys. came out towards the end of 2012. they do have facebook but I haven't checked it so I have no idea if theyre still active. these guys combine bands like exodus and testament and overkill seamlessly with that motorhead groove and even a little of that punk rock that burning love does so well. honestly  I can here a little bit of some other Canadian hardcore bands, who ive talked about before, like cobra noir and the black hand in there as well. I think adam did a post on cobra noir a while back but I may refresh that soon and hit ire and the black hand and acrid too. all good. all have ties to cursed. all require your attention. dammit.
